Dr Cai introducing his topic

The lecture was titled, ‘On Shock Structure Computation Using Moment Methods in the Gas Kinetic Theory’. Dr Cai received his PhD from Peking University and his research focuses on mathematical modelling and scientific computing of rarefied gas dynamics.

During his lecture, he talked about the application of moment methods in solving shock structures. He explained that the shock wave was a fundamental phenomenon in fluid dynamics. He also focused on a seminal paper written by Holway in the 1960s and Weiss’s response to his paper, saying that there were some problems with Holway’s paper.

Dr Cai said, “Although there isn’t an exact solution for shock structure as of now, the best thing we can do is to question existing theories and conduct research”.
